Visits from old students
It's late and I'm wrapping up my day and in he slides through my classroom door like Kramer.
"Hey there! Just wanted to come check out the 'ol stomping grounds." He looks almost the same as a year ago, only five inches taller.
"I was just thinking about you!" I cry. "I was going through old oratorical speeches and videos and pulled yours out!"
"Oh, no! You didn't show it did you?!"
"I was thinking about it..." just to tease him. He wore a fedora for his speech performance, made full use of the stage with theatrics, and truly ad libbed his way through most of it. It was awesome. The whole class was in stitches. Despite, or more likely because of his unconventionality, I put him through to the final round. Not surprisingly he was deemed a little too "out there" for the county judges.
It didn't matter - he had a blast and we all made a lasting memory - and now he's back and he remembers it vividly, and this has just made my day.

Student visits are the absolute best! I love the emotion you provide and description of the visit!
ReplyDeleteI love when they come back. They mostly come to see their 8th grade teachers, but sometimes the drop in on us in 6th grade. I love when the worry in their eyes that I don't remember them disappears.
ReplyDeleteI love when my students stop by my room at the end of the day. I'm not sure what it is about my room but the moment they enter they take a deep breath and relax. But these visits are the absolute best.
ReplyDeleteI love how you tell this story. The detail at the beginning comparing the entrane to Kramer. The dialogue. The details about his performance. You made me feel like I was there with you both. And it was an enjoyable time. That also shows lots about you as a teacher...a great one who kiddos take time to come back and say hi to a favorite teacher!
ReplyDeleteHow serendipitous! The Kramer allusion was perfect!
